The International Coach Federation (ICF) defines coaching in the following way:
"Professional coaching is an ongoing professional relationship that helps people produce extraordinary results in their lives, careers, businesses or organizations. Through the process of coaching, clients deepen their learning, improve their performance, and enhance their quality of life. "
Coaching is really about reaching goals and unleashing potential. When you enter into a coaching relationship you enter a non-judgmental environment where you are free to be yourself, dream about your ideal self and work on your future.
In coaching is believed that the clients are the experts in their own lives or businesses. As coaches we truly believe that the answer you are seeking is already in you. We truly believe that you are a person full of potential and creativity. The coach is not there to offer advice. The coach's job is to support you in discovering what lies within you so that you come a step closer to your ideal self, your vision and the source of your creativity.
Coaching is really inspiring and has many things to offer to a client: clarification of values, a sounding board for new ideas, support in implementing new plans, acknowledgement and encouragement.
Coaching is at the same time an art, a science and a practice. As a science, is based on different theories, such as adult learning theory, positive psychology and management theory. It is also an art created in the co-creative relationship between a coach and a client during the coaching session.
Coaching is not therapy, counseling or psychology. Coaches work with emotionally healthy people. The aim of coaching is to turn a fully functional person into an exceptional one. Thus, coaching should not be perceived as a therapeutic intervention. While therapy focuses on the past and experiences related to past events, coaching focuses on the future and goal setting. It is really action oriented.
